Joe and Heather Gilkey are among the several residents that have extended their stories to share with everyone! After working in education for nearly thirty years, this couple decided to settle right here in Gainesville at the Oak Hammock campus. Before making this decision, Joe advanced his math, physics, and technology background, which ultimately led him to an administration position titled media supervisor. Heather has vast experience in education while teaching in the same school district for 26 years. She’s taught middle school economics, sewing, entrepreneurship, human sexuality, decision making, and problem-solving. That’s quite the amount of experience!
Joe and Heather have also had the opportunity to travel to various locations across the world. Like several other residents, their stories are worldly and will be sure to surprise you! Take the time to ask them about their experiences while traveling to Australia, New Zealand, and several Caribbean islands.
They noted how happy they were to decide to move into Oak Hammock because of the beautiful community surrounding them and the vast opportunities for education available when in retirement. Additionally, it has given this couple the chance to engage in multiple volunteer opportunities, both with Oak Hammock and the nearby Orlando area.
