Playing Our Part

Our infection control task force at Oak Hammock continues to receive new guidance from experts at UF Health; and we continue to monitor information coming from the Alachua County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control.

After seeing a rise in positive COVID-19 cases in early January 2022 in Alachua County, the area has steadily declined in its positivity rate. On March 13, 2022, The CDC announced that Alachua County’s positivity rate was 2.73%, with only 48 new admissions of confirmed COVID-19 cases among county residents. This updated information moved the level of community transmission from “high” down to “substantial.”

With this new designation came a different set of guidelines for wearing masks indoors:

  • Living in a county with a “substantial” level of community transmission allows for individuals to talk with their respective health care providers about whether they need to wear a mask and take other precautions when indoors.
  • If you have household or social contact with someone at high risk for severe disease, consider wearing a mask when indoors with them.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have followed the recommendations of the CDC, UF Health, local and state health departments, physician experts and industry advocates, including LeadingAge. With the new designation for Alachua County, Oak Hammock residents are no longer required to wear a mask when indoors on the Independent Living side of our campus. At this time all staff must continue to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

In spite of these changes, if you feel more comfortable continuing to wear a mask, we encourage you to do so. If it becomes necessary for the safety and well-being of our community, these new protocols may be reversed or modified.

This does not apply when inside the Health Pavilion, where all non-residents, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a KN-95 mask when indoors.

Additional Reminders

  • Guests who are vaccinated are no longer required to wear masks.
  • Residents may invite unvaccinated guests to campus, including children, but those guests should wear masks when in common areas.
  • Residents will be responsible for ensuring their guests follow our guidelines.
  • Hosts of any onsite events are responsible for notifying attendees of Oak Hammock’s infection control protocols.
  • The security team will continue to perform COVID-19 screenings via a verbal questionnaire at the security gate for all visitors and guests.
  • Guests are welcome anywhere in Independent Living – inside or outside. However, because of limited staff in the dining rooms and The Grille Room, we ask that you find alternative locations to dine with friends and family unless celebrating a special event.

Meetings and Events

  • Resident meetings and events may continue at this time, with hybrid options available when appropriate.
  • Non-residents are allowed to participate in person or via Zoom.

  • Transportation services will continue, with masks required.
