Bill & Deb Rossi
Where are you from? Where have you lived before moving to Oak Hammock?
DR: I’m from Cleveland, Ohio but we lived on Lake Santa Fe for about thirty years, which is right near Gainesville.Close
What was your career?
BR: I had three careers. My early career I worked for large companies, large Fortune 500 companies. Basically, I worked in finance. In the middle of my career, I worked for startups. I was an entrepreneur. In my later career, I was a professor at the University of Florida. I taught courses in entrepreneurship and finance.
DR: I started out at Ford Motor Company in market research and marketing. Then I was with a few Fortune 500 companies in product development. The when we moved to Gainesville in 1987, I worked for WUFTV and then I finished up as the director of marketing for the University of Florida Performing Arts Center.Close
What is your biggest accomplishment (professionally or personally)?
BR: I was chosen as professor of year at UF. A close second is that I developed a course and some material in that course that is used in universities around the country now.
DR: Raising children and being with our grandchildren.Close
Do you have any hidden talents?
BR: I’m a very good fisherman, at least I was. I won the Florida Team Championship in competitive tournament bass fishing, a long time ago.Close
What do you like to do in your spare time?
DR: We like to travel. We have been to 54 countries. Italy and Egypt are my two favorites. We are planning on going to the Scandinavian countries, an African safari and going out to the American west. I also like to read.
BR: My favorites are Italy, Panama and France.Close
What made you want to join the Oak Hammock community?
BR: At first, Deb was the one that was interested, and I came to understand that this would be a gift to our children. We are removing ourselves as a burden to them.
DR: I know a lot of the residents here. Some of our friends came, and we really never considered anywhere else.Close
What is one thing you would want the residents/prospective residents of Oak Hammock to know?
BR: The residents here are really interesting people. There are people who have lived all over the word, there are people here who are former CEOs or CFOs and people who have accomplished things of significance. You get to meet them, talk to them and in some cases, you get to become friends with them. I find it really interesting to talk to people that are really accomplished. I also like the contined learning. It’s more than just the Institute for Learning in Retirement. I would have never gone to the retired Florida faculty meetings but every one of them has a lecture by a subject matter expert about something I do not know about. So, I really like the opportunity to continue learning. The third thing I like is to be involved. I like to have things to do and be a force for change. I can do that here in all kinds of ways.
DR: The diversity of things to do here is amazing. For example, today I worked out in the circuit, then I went to a total body fitness class at the gym and then attended a lecture on the Middle East, all before noon. Also, the field trips. I have been to St. Augustine and Orlando. It’s fun!Close
