The Oak Hammock Singers is a group of resident participants—both men and women—who share a love of singing beautiful music and are well known for their musical excellence! The group performs two concerts each year, hosts the inspiring Christmas on the Stairs sing-a-long for all residents, which is one of the most beloved community events for all music lovers. They also provide vocal music in the Health Pavilion on special occasions.
The singing group rehearsals are held on Mondays from 3:30–5 p.m. in the Oak Room, running from September through April.
History
Founded more than 20 years ago by a resident and former music teacher, the Oak Hammock Singers has grown into one of the community’s most cherished activities. Today, about 50 residents sing with the group. Some bring musical training and past choral experience, while others simply come with enthusiasm and a love of singing—no auditions required!
The choir performs in four-part harmony, presenting a varied concert repertoire that includes traditional, classical and contemporary works—some sung a cappella. Examples include Sing Your Way Home (traditional), Abschied vom Walde (English translation) by Mendelssohn and Music of the Night by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
On occasion, University of Florida music students join the group for concerts, each sharing their exemplary singing experience while performing solos. Another charming tradition allows several Oak Hammock residents to serve as featured soloists. The concerts are truly a celebration of music for all!
Musical Leadership
The Oak Hammock Singers are currently directed by two retired University of Florida music professors, Ronald Burrichter and Brenda Smith, Ph.D., who generously share their musical experience, expertise and passion for music with the community.
Dr. Smith is nationally and internationally recognized for her research on the aging voice, while Mr. Burrichter, a former member of the renowned Robert Shaw Chorale, served as UF’s choral director. Together, this talented husband-and-wife team bring a wealth of artistry, scholarship and warmth to every rehearsal. They are also co-authors of Class Voice: Fundamental Skills for Lifelong Singing.
Thanks to their guidance, the members of the Oak Hammock Singers continue to grow musically and joyfully share the gift of song with friends and neighbors throughout the Oak Hammock community.
