For nearly two and a half years, Daniel Eakins has been a dedicated systems administrator in the information technology department at Oak Hammock, where he has made a significant impact on both residents and team members by solving a wide range of technical challenges. What you might not know about Daniel is that he is truly a renaissance man, with a diverse array of talents and interests. For example, he is an excellent writer, a skill he has applied throughout his varied career.

Daniel is appreciated by many of the Oak Hammock community. Bob Stott, VP for Integrated Operations, said, “It’s a pleasure working with Daniel. His calm and organized approach makes him a reliable resource for both residents and staff. We especially value his willingness to go the extra mile, whether it’s helping someone with a project or seeking out new knowledge to share with the team.”

Meeting with Daniel in his office, we talked about his life and role at Oak Hammock. Seated behind several large computer screens which take up most of his desk, Daniel is articulate, thoughtful and polite and smiles when he discusses his work and family. His calm and patient demeanor is very helpful when helping frustrated people who can’t get their computer to work! It appears his manner at work is reflected in everyday life as well.

Daniel grew up in the small, north-central Florida town of O’Brien, alongside his two older brothers and his parents, who have been married for over 50 years.

His professional work experience is extensive and varied, including roles in small business and larger companies as a graphic designer, marketing and advertising professional, lumber sales representative, corrections officer, web designer, technical support specialist, IT coordinator, site technician and data communications specialist. Beyond his professional career, Daniel is also passionate about building outdoor Halloween decorations and creating proton props similar to those seen in the “Ghostbusters” films.

Daniel and his wife, Kristin, have been married for almost 20 years and have four children, ages 12 to 18. When Kristin pursued her master’s degree in accounting, Daniel made the selfless decision to leave school and work to support the family while she sought her dreams of being an accountant. He plans to continue his education one day and earn his bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, but for now, he prioritizes raising their children. With two parents working full-time, managing the daily activities of a large family is challenging, but they handle it well.

Their oldest daughter, Maddison, is a senior at Gainesville High School and will graduate this spring. She plans to study aerospace engineering at Santa Fe College. Several of their children are musically inclined, a talent they inherited from Kristin, who plays both the piano and violin. “I don’t have any musical talent,” Daniel humorously admitted.

Recently, Daniel reflected on his role at Oak Hammock:

What are your job responsibilities?

I manage the entire lifecycle of Oak Hammock’s computer systems, from choosing and setting up hardware and software to ensuring everything runs smoothly. My work includes planning, testing, troubleshooting and addressing technical issues. I focus heavily on system security by setting up access controls, monitoring activity and preparing for emergencies. I also keep systems updated, collaborate with vendors and manage activities. Additionally, I help design and support networks, create policies for their use and ensure security measures are effective. I’m constantly seeking ways to improve our systems and support the organization’s success.

What I love most about my job is the opportunity to get creative while keeping Oak Hammock secure and running smoothly. I enjoy coming up with new ways to protect our systems and ensure they’re always ready to meet the needs of the team. Whether it’s designing better security measures, staying ahead of potential issues or streamlining our systems, I take pride in knowing my work helps keep everything running seamlessly. It’s incredibly rewarding to contribute to such an important mission while constantly finding new ways to improve and innovate.

How do you apply We Care to what you do?

The We Care values of welcoming, exceptional, courteous, attentive, responsive and empathetic guide my work every day. Being welcoming means fostering a supportive and approachable environment for my colleagues and ensuring they feel comfortable coming to me with their IT needs or challenges. I aim to be exceptional by proactively identifying and implementing innovative solutions to keep our systems secure and efficient. Courtesy is reflected in how I communicate, ensuring that I’m respectful and patient, no matter the issue at hand. Attentiveness is at the core of my work—I closely monitor systems, address potential vulnerabilities and anticipate needs before they become problems. Responsiveness is key in IT, and I pride myself on being quick to resolve issues and adapt to changing priorities. Finally, empathy drives me to understand the unique challenges of those I support, ensuring that my solutions not only meet technical requirements but also make their work easier and more effective. These values help me contribute meaningfully to Oak Hammock’s success.

How do you make a difference for the residents and team members?

At Oak Hammock, making a difference for the residents and team members is all about listening, understanding and delivering exceptional service. Every day, I prioritize hearing their concerns, addressing their issues effectively and ensuring they feel valued and supported. Quite frequently there are multiple issues during the day, and I balance my duties between the issues of the residents and staff.

I believe in providing a white-glove experience, where no detail is too small, and every solution is tailored to meet resident needs. Bringing a smile to work every day adds a touch of happiness that can brighten someone’s moment, especially for those who might need it most. By giving my best in everything I do, the rewards are immeasurable—not just in solving problems but in building trust and creating a positive impact on the lives of those who call Oak Hammock home.

I’ve always enjoyed building things. In my free time, I create Halloween props and movie replicas, such as a working 1:1 scale proton pack modeled after those in the “Ghostbusters” movies that took me nine months to complete. I’ve also built a working pirate water fountain for Halloween, which took over four months. My family loves spending time together playing card and board games, enjoying bonfires and making s’mores. We also enjoy occasional trips to the beach or to Legoland.

“During the holidays, Daniel Eakins was very gracious and patient when he helped me to connect to the internet an electronic device gifted to me by my daughter. He brought smiles!”    – Harvey Goldstein. resident

“On numerous occasions, I have had the privilege and pleasure of working with Daniel Eakins. I have found him to be very knowledgeable about technical matters ranging from patiently helping me set up my new iPhone to fixing a complex problem with the audio/visual system in the Oak Room that would have negatively impacted an important ILR presentation. Daniel always responds to any request quickly and with a smile on his face even when I know I am interrupting something else on which he is working. He is a true professional. And on a personal note, I enjoy talking with him about his daughter who is a saxophone player in the Gainesville High School Band. We are very fortunate to have Daniel as a member of the Oak Hammock technology team.” – Don McGlothlin, resident
