Where a University Founded a Community

We Are Oak Hammock

The mission of Oak Hammock at the University of Florida is to support the well-being of our residents and create an active, caring community by providing a continuum of quality lifestyle and health care programs and outstanding enrichment opportunities in conjunction with the University of Florida.

Nearly 20 years ago, university researchers uncovered the benefits of aging in a community so we decided to partner with the University of Florida to build a Life Plan Community. Our “Life Plan Community” is based on academic research and provides residents with opportunities to enjoy a lifestyle that is active, engaged and purposeful.

Oak Hammock residents are vibrant, energetic and interested in enriching their lives. Continuing education is available to them through events, classes and programs.

Vision: Transforming the Experience of Aging:

We envision Oak Hammock as the nation’s preeminent continuing care retirement community committed to a vibrant lifestyle by partnering with the University of Florida to optimize residents’ cultural experiences and mental and physical health.

Our History

Oak Hammock’s history is steeped in academic research and the belief in a better life in retirement. Based on Professor of Sociology Gordon Streib’s research on the benefits of living in a retirement community, retired faculty and alumni encouraged leaders at the University of Florida to consider sponsoring a Life Plan Community (formerly known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community, or CCRC.)

Our Executive Team

Our executive team includes several experts in the various areas of senior living. They embody the WeCare service vision of “Compassionate Professionals, Inspired Service.” WeCare is bound by the following types of behaviors in the workplace: welcoming, exceptional, caring, attentive, responsive and empathetic.
