Art in the Corridors is a subcommittee of the Oak Hammock Interior Design Committee. The program is strictly a volunteer resident activity, with no budget and no funding from the Oak Hammock community. It began many years ago with a group of founding senior living residents who were unhappy over the institutional look of the long hallways connecting the independent living and assisted living apartments. This group actively sought donations of artwork from resident artists, local artists and pieces from the individual collections of residents in the senior living community, which they hung throughout the residential areas of The Grove (building one) and The Woodland (building two). Residents today feel that the variety of art provides a homelike and enjoyable environment as they proceed down the halls.
The collection has grown and now includes over 900 pieces, including fine art, visual art, creative arts and includes unique pieces from a photo gallery. New artwork comes through donations to Recycled Riches or directly from current residents. Art in the Corridors organizes periodic workdays to hang new additions or refresh a particular area.
New members are always welcome – artistic expression, creativity or art backgrounds are not necessary. However, personal mobility is important as there is a lot of walking involved, and the physical hanging of items is done by the committee. Attending a meeting of Interior Design Committee is one way to learn more about Art in the Corridors at Oak Hammock.
