For Monesia “Moe” Reese, a new housekeeper at Oak Hammock at the University of Florida, a clean environment is about more than appearance, it’s about creating a place where residents feel comfortable, cared for and at home. Whether she’s cleaning and preparing a resident’s living environment, sharing a kind word or lending a helping hand or emotional support, Reese strives to make every day a little brighter for the people who call Oak Hammock home.

Although she has been part of the Oak Hammock team for just a few months, Reese has already made a lasting impression with her warm smile, positive attitude and commitment to going above and beyond for residents and other team members.

“I love what I do,” she says. “I love to clean and be around people, especially older adults. I learn so much from them and their stories. So many of our residents remind me of my grandparents.”

A Gainesville native and Buchholz High School graduate, Reese has devoted the past 14 years to serving others in health care. Before joining Oak Hammock, she worked as a home health aide, patient care assistant, certified nursing assistant and housekeeping supervisor at several health care facilities. She also works a second job caring for veterans through One Point Nursing. In addition, she provides home health care for her mother.

Reese is well respected by administration and her peers. Her positive attitude, genuine kindness, exceptional work ethic and willingness to support others have made a lasting impression on residents, coworkers and leadership alike.

As Housekeeping Manager Rebecca Snowden said, “We are incredibly fortunate to have Monesia as a member of both the Oak Hammock family and our housekeeping team. She makes residents feel seen and valued, supports her teammates without hesitation and approaches every task with warmth, respect and a welcoming smile. Her commitment to excellence has elevated the standard within our department.”

The number of WeCare nominations Reese has received in such a short time speaks volumes about the impact she has made. Each nomination reflects the compassion, professionalism, respect and genuine care she brings to every interaction.

Even with a busy schedule, Reese takes time to provide personalized care and positive social interaction with each resident she serves.

Reese says working at Oak Hammock had been a goal for years. “I believe everything happens in God’s timing,” she says. “I wanted to work here for a long time, so I stayed positive and waited for the right opportunity.”

What do you like most about your job?

As a housekeeper, I believe every detail matters. I take pride in checking my work, making sure each space is clean, welcoming and ready for residents and their guests.

I always introduce myself with a smile. If I can make someone else smile, it makes me happy. Several residents have told me, ‘Your smile and happy face brighten my day.’

Some of the most rewarding moments come from simply spending time with residents and hearing their life stories. I believe listening is one of the best ways to show compassion and build meaningful connections. When welcomed, I also offer to pray with residents who appreciate spiritual encouragement.

How do you apply We Care to what you do? 

The WeCare values of welcoming, exceptional, courteous, attentive, responsive and empathetic are what I strive to be every day.

I greet everyone by introducing myself, listening to their concerns and responding when I see someone who needs assistance. I feel that is the best way to create meaningful relationships and a supportive environment.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

Much of my caring nature comes from the women who helped shape my life. I credit my grandmother, who helped raise me, with teaching me to cook, care for others and value each family member. I still enjoy making my grandmother’s recipes, including homemade cornbread and sweet potato pie.

Outside of work, I enjoy decorating people’s homes and helping plan their parties. In addition, I enjoy traveling, shopping, spending time at the beach and spending time with my nieces.

I married my husband, Anthony Mungin, in 2024. Because he serves in the Merchant Marine, he is often away for extended periods, making the time we spend together especially meaningful.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue growing with Oak Hammock. My goal is to become a housekeeping supervisor and at some point, am considering returning to school to become a registered nurse.

My personal motto is stay positive and have faith, which guides both my work and home life!
