As the security team leader at Oak Hammock, Randall Coleman is committed to ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining a secure campus, free from unauthorized visitors. He takes pride in his work, greeting each day with a smile and a deep unwavering dedication to his role.

When asked about Coleman people consistently mention his warm smile, kind heart, commitment and positive attitude. Raised in Williston, Florida by his mother and grandmother, Coleman learned early on the importance of optimism, making a constant effort to take care of others and lending a helping hand whenever possible.

Coleman has been part of the Oak Hammock team for nine years, starting on the housekeeping team before transitioning to the security team after just one year. His co-workers admire his strong work ethic, loyalty and guidance, as well as his continual encouragement of others. “I try to encourage people because you never know what they are going through,” he says.

“Randall is an outstanding team player. His positivity and dedication shine through in everything he does. No matter the task, he follows through with excellence. I wish I had a dozen more team members like Randall,” said Katrina Peterson, Coleman’s supervisor.

Brittany Matus-Ray, Oak Hammock’s Assisted Living manager, also has been an admirer of Coleman’s work ethic for years. “I’ve witnessed Randall responding to emergency calls, and he has utmost concern for the residents’ safety. Randall is so genuine and always does the right thing even when no one is watching. You’d have to see him in action to understand how remarkable his heart is. I think the world of Randall and know the care he provides is more than mere words can describe.”

Recently, Coleman shared his thoughts on his role at Oak Hammock:

How do you make a difference for the residents?
I like to put a smile on their face, stay positive and reassure them that everything will be okay. I always ask if they need help and take the time to listen to their stories. I believe it’s important to show compassion and be the best person I can be every day.

How do you apply the WeCare values to your work?
The WeCare values—welcoming, exceptional, courteous, attentive, responsive and empathetic—are essential to what I do. I try to lead by example, showing these values through my actions. I make it a point to check in on residents, and some even have my personal cell phone number, knowing they can call me whenever they need help. I let my work speak for itself and always strive to maintain a positive attitude. Even the small efforts you do can make a lasting impact on someone who might be going through difficult times.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
People might not know that I’ve struggled with depression my whole life. Oak Hammock has truly saved me by providing the support I needed. They allowed me to get counseling through the Employee Assistance Program, or EAP, offered through Human Resources, and I’m much better now. Oak Hammock gave me a chance to heal, and I’m grateful for that. I try to give back to this place each day.

Though I’m naturally a shy person, my depression made me more withdrawn. But through counseling, I’ve learned to open up more to others. Helping others and showing empathy has become a source of strength for me.

In addition to his work at Oak Hammock, Coleman is an active member of his church and cherishes time with his family. He has four children, ranging from 5 to 25 years old. His oldest daughter lives with him, while his other two daughters reside in Gainesville and St. Petersburg. Though his son is not currently nearby, Coleman remains close with his family. He’s also a passionate sports fan, especially of the Florida Gators and the Los Angeles Lakers. While he always dreamed of playing football, asthma prevented him from pursuing it.
